Grades 1-6 of Christ the King Academy
The Foundations of Learning for a Lifetime

We provide a balanced, challenging and enriching grades 1-6 program that focuses on both academic and character development as well. We want to make sure that our students can succeed at school and in life and help them to grow intellectually, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.
Catholic Values and Character Development
As a Catholic school, character shaping is an important component of the curriculum and the religious education forms an integral part of this. In grades 1-6, our students attend religion class where they learn more about the Catholic teachings and its values and how to live as Christians, with compassion, honesty, respect and responsibility.
The faith based education helps the students to have a right direction, whereby they are well prepared to face the challenges of today’s world. Some of the qualities that the students are expected to demonstrate in their interpersonal communication include kindness, generosity, and forgiveness. We also include community service in our school activities or connect with community projects, and the students learn the value of giving back to the community.

A Comprehensive and Balanced Curriculum
The elementary program at our school is a comprehensive curriculum that follows the Ontario curriculum and is suitable for grades 1-6. The following are the core subjects covered in our curriculum:
- Catechism: From Grade 1, students will start learning the Ten Commandments, and basically about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and Catholic saints. They will also learn some basic prayers in French, such as the Our Father, Hail Mary and other prayers. In later stages, students will get to learn about the Sacraments, Bible stories, and the lessons of Jesus. The curriculum also incorporates the values of community, love and service to help the students to appreciate how faith is incorporated in our daily lives. In the later grades, the curriculum enriches the students with in-depth knowledge of Catholic doctrine, social justice, and Catholic ethical and moral decision making. Students will also engage in service projects and discuss how their faith is expressed in the community. Note: From Grades 2 and up, the curriculum also includes the preparation for the Sacrament of First Communion as an essential component.
- Language Arts: This course helps students to develop their reading, writing, grammar, spelling, and oral communication skills. Students learn to write creatively, tell stories and participate in group discussions to improve their language skills and expression.
- Mathematics: The development of the basic math skills and the acquisition of the problem solving strategies. The program includes logical thinking, number operations, geometry, measurement and data analysis, all explained through interesting and practical approaches.
- Science: To nurture children’s interest in and inquiry into the world of science, technology, and mathematics through hands-on learning of biological, physical, chemical, and environmental processes. Students learn by doing experiments, observing the natural world, and understanding scientific concepts in practice.
- Social Studies: Help students to know the world around them through the geography, history and civics lessons. We promote tolerance and respect to different cultures and communities and the role of each person in the society.
- Physical Education: We Propagate the Catholic teachings on the theology of the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit through all of our physical education programs. We study physical fitness, teamwork and healthy habits. The PE class includes number of activities which help in the child’s physical development, coordination and independence.
- English: For Francophone students, this program is to help them gain reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in English without eclipsing French proficiency. Literacy, communication and cultural understanding are highlighted while the program offers tailored support and integration into other subjects
This curricula ensures that students get an all round education which not only addresses academic aspects but also address social, emotional and physical development.
A Focus on Individualized Learning
We know that every student has his or her own way of learning. We also ensure that the learning process is personalized to the student’s needs. Teachers at the school work with students and their families to identify their abilities and weaknesses to ensure they are challenged appropriately and assisted where need be to breach the gap in learning.
We apply different modalities to teach the students according to their learning style, such as visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning. Students, teachers, or group projects, individual tasks, or practical exercises are all effective ways for our students to engage and own the learning process.
The small classes help the teacher and the students to interact more frequently, thus providing more individual attention and a better understanding of the topic. This approach helps the child to feel valued and encouraged to achieve his or her best.
Collaboration and Community Building
We also strongly support the idea of collaboration in the child’s growth. In grades 1-6, our students engage in group work, peer learning, and class discussions. This helps in the development of teamwork, which is an important life skill that helps the students to learn how to communicate, lead, and cooperate with their peers.
At Christ the King Academy, we also give much emphasis on the concept of community. Christ the King Academy students are expected to work in teams, help each other, appreciate each other and achieve joint goals. This is done through group activities, events, and duties where the students learn to share and devote their time and effort for the benefit of the group and the society as a whole.
